HIHS CCA Orientation

By: Alastair Leow
CCA(co-curricular activity)is an activity part of every secondary school student’s school life.CCA Orientation is held annually to let the newcomers of the school sec 1 students understand more about the types of CCA in our school. During CCA Orientation, Secondary 1 students were all lined up in an orderly manner to explore the different CCA around the school. Seniors of the CCA will then give out pamphlets to let the Secondary 1s to understand more about their CCA. For example, basketballers have made a signboard of their CCA timing and venue. While for the uniform groups, they should their marches and training when the Secondary 1s visited. A questionnaire was made to understand the views of the Sec 1 about the CCA. Although 20 students were questioned,17 of the Sec 1,no matter male or female, are willing to have a CCA if they have a choice between having or not having a CCA. When ask the remaining 3 about why they would not want a CCA,one of a boys answered:’’It’s already very tired to have a long school day ,and a CCA to tire you out even further?That’s insane!’’A teacher was asked about her view towards CCA.She said’’It is important for students to have a CCA as of course,the CCA points and also,student can learn thing that cannot be learned from lessons in class or opening their textbooks. For instance ,joining  St.John’s Ambulance Brigade,or SJAB for short, can help one to be exposed to medical knowledges.One also learns discipline from joining uniform groups .Also, because in CCA, students are often exposed to more groupwork, hence improving relationship between CCA members and students can also learn how to bond with people better’’.However,a word of caution from the teacher not to join CCA just because your best friends join a certain CCA ,and you have no interest in it. It will only become a form of torture to yourself as you would not enjoy the CCA.CCA is meant to be a pastime for students.Also,do not join more than 2 CCA just because of the CCA points.Students often cannot balance between school time and personal time,hence deproving in school work and CCA,and often feels lethargic during lesson hence falling asleep most of the time in lesson time.A student also said:’’It’s insane to have more than 1 CCA .Although CCA could  be unjoyable ,it can be hectic as well. I do not want to die stressing myself. Although from the Sec 1 about CCA orientation:I feel that the seniors are funny, trying to let us join into the CCA,but I hope I can also help to let the new Sec 1s join into my future CCA in 2015.It looks fun and enjoyable.
